About the role

Senior Systems Engineer at Automattic, responsible for high availability, performance, and security of global infrastructure across multiple data centers. Role involves autonomous design, prototyping, and maintenance of large-scale hosting systems with emphasis on Nginx, MySQL/MariaDB, PHP at scale, and low-friction developer support.

Responsibilities

  • Maximizing the availability and uptime of all services through proactive planning, sound architectural decisions, automation and rapid response to failures
  • Making Automattic services as fast as possible for users through optimization of server-side and client-side interactions, and collaborating with 3rd party services as needed
  • Ensuring services are safe and secure for users and employees through proactive monitoring, real-time response, and maintaining data integrity/backups for disaster recovery
  • Removing friction between Automattic developers and their goals of shipping software; providing timely answers when questions arise
  • Architect, prototype, and maintain solutions to different problems and hosting requirements
  • Demonstrate extreme attention to detail and strive for unparalleled operational excellence
  • Availabilty for 2-3 week post-COVID travel per year to meet teammates in person

Qualifications

  • Maintained large Nginx setups with advanced routing configuration, load balancing, reliability, and high availability
  • Experience running very large MySQL/MariaDB deployments with strong performance, uptime, and data integrity
  • Experience running and debugging PHP applications at scale
  • Understanding of lower level systems stacks – filesystems, network, memory management, kernel internals, etc
  • Deep operational and maintenance experience with very large and complex public facing web hosting systems
  • Ability to autonomously architect, prototype, and maintain solutions for different problems and hosting requirements
  • Extreme attention to detail and commitment to operational excellence
  • Willingness to travel 2-3 weeks per year post-COVID
