About the role

Senior Software Engineer to work on Elasticsearch distributed systems with a focus on the Serverless offering, addressing scalability, performance, and resilience across clustered nodes and data indexing/management.

Responsibilities

  • Leveraging distributed systems expertise to build and operate core pieces of the Serverless Elasticsearch offering
  • Improving Elasticsearch components that support concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines
  • Maintaining the cluster coordination system to sustain performance as nodes join/leave and data moves, while ensuring safety and liveness
  • Pushing the limits on shards, nodes, and data volume Elasticsearch can handle
  • Investigating and proposing solutions to performance or concurrency issues
  • Supporting support engineers with difficult problems
  • Owning end-to-end operational investigations until performance or stability issues are resolved

Qualifications

  • Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms
  • Strong Java skills and familiarity with core data structures, concurrency constructs, and newer language features
  • Deep technical proficiency in algorithms
  • Experience with complex, highly distributed systems (not relying solely on off-the-shelf services)
  • Ability to build and debug features with broad impact across multiple machines
  • Ability to own projects from design to delivery and collaborate across teams
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debugging, and optimization while owning outcomes
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and transition between projects, codebases, or teams based on priorities
  • Ability to work autonomously, drive decisions and results in a distributed team using asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication
