About the role

Senior Software Engineer focused on Elasticsearch distributed systems and Serverless offering, tackling deep distributed systems challenges around node communication, data indexing, allocation, and management across a cluster to improve scale, performance, and resilience.

Responsibilities

  • Leveraging distributed systems expertise to build and operate core pieces of our Serverless Elasticsearch offering.
  • Improving Elasticsearch components that support concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines.
  • Maintaining our cluster coordination system to maintain high performance as nodes join/leave and data moves, while preserving safety and liveness.
  • Pushing the limits on the number of shards, nodes, and petabytes supported.
  • Investigating performance or concurrency issues and proposing solutions.
  • Supporting support engineers with harder problems.
  • Owning operational investigations end-to-end until performance or stability issues are resolved.

Qualifications

  • Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
  • Strong skills in core Java and familiarity with standard data structures and concurrency constructs, plus newer language features.
  • Deep technical proficiency in algorithms.
  • Experience understanding and working on complex, highly distributed systems rather than relying on off-the-shelf services.
  • Ability to build and debug features with broad impact across multiple machines.
  • Ability to own projects end-to-end, including technical design and collaboration to develop components.
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debugging complex systems, and optimizing code while owning outcomes.
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and transition between projects, codebases, or teams based on priorities.
  • Capacity to work autonomously, drive decisions and results in a distributed team via asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication.
