About the role

Senior Software Engineer to join Elasticsearch - Distributed Systems, focusing on scale, performance, and resilience for the Serverless offering, tackling deep distributed systems challenges across node communication, indexing, allocation, and data management.

Responsibilities

  • Leveraging distributed systems expertise to build and operate core pieces of the next-generation Serverless Elasticsearch offering.
  • Improving Elasticsearch components that support concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines.
  • Maintaining the cluster coordination system to preserve performance as nodes join/leave and data moves, ensuring safety and liveness of the system.
  • Pushing the limits on the number of shards, nodes, and petabytes Elasticsearch can handle today.
  • Investigating performance or concurrency issues and proposing solutions.
  • Supporting our support engineers with harder problems.
  • Owning operational investigations end-to-end, from issue detection to resolution.

Qualifications

  • Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
  • Strong skills in core Java and familiarity with standard data structures, concurrency constructs, and newer language features.
  • Deep technical proficiency in algorithms.
  • Experience with complex, highly distributed systems rather than off-the-shelf services.
  • Ability to build and debug features with broad impact across multiple machines.
  • Ability to own projects from design through delivery and collaboration.
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debugging, and optimization while owning final outcomes.
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and adapt to different projects and teams based on priorities.
  • Capacity to work autonomously, drive decisions, and communicate asynchronously and transparently.
