Lead Machine Learning Scientist, FinCrime
About the role
Lead IC role in Monzo's Financial Crime Data team, focusing on building and deploying advanced ML models to detect and prevent financial crime in real time, with opportunities to innovate and influence technical standards across the ML discipline.
Responsibilities
- Leading the design and development of advanced real-time Machine Learning models for financial crime detection and risk assessment
- Providing technical leadership and mentoring within the Machine Learning discipline
- Collaborating with cross-functional squads (product, data science, backend, design) in an agile environment
- Identifying and scoping impactful opportunities to tackle Financial Crime and Fraud using ML
- Working with the MLOps team to improve tooling for rapid iteration and full ML lifecycle optimisations
- Explaining and justifying ML approaches to ensure alignment with business and customer needs
- Steering technical work to raise standards and best practices across the ML function
Qualifications
- Multiple-year track record of leading development and deployment of advanced ML models to solve real business problems, preferably in a fast-moving tech company
- Experience developing and shipping deep learning, graph-based, and/or sequence-based ML architectures to production with measurable business impact
- Strong production Python coding skills and SQL; willingness to learn Go
- Ability to operate in ambiguous environments and help teams resolve ambiguity
- Interest in reducing financial crime through data-driven strategies
- Product-minded with a focus on customer outcomes and data-informed decision making
- Excellent communication skills to translate ML concepts to non-domain colleagues
- Self-starter mindset with proactive identification of issues and opportunities
- Experience with ML model lifecycle, experimentation, and deployment in production
