About the role

We’re looking for Software Engineers who want to help us design and build the systems and tools that run the firm. You’ll find Software Engineers in all parts of Jane Street, solving real problems in critical areas ranging from trading desks to our accounting team, as well as building foundational infrastructure. We emphasize functional programming with OCaml as our primary tool, and Python for data analysis, visualization, and machine learning. We actively support open source projects and value engineers with diverse language backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build systems and tools that run the firm
  • Solve real problems in critical areas from trading desks to accounting
  • Build foundational infrastructure (e.g., network monitoring, risk models)
  • Engage with open source software and contribute to ongoing support of projects like Mercurial, OCaml compiler, OPAM package manager

Qualifications

  • Top-notch programmer with a love for technology
  • Intellectually curious, collaborative, eager to learn
  • Humble and unafraid to ask questions and admit mistakes
  • Background in functional programming, OCaml, Python, finance, or any specific field not required
  • Strong problem-solving ability and ability to learn quickly

Benefits

  • Base salary is $300,000. Base salary is only one part of Jane Street total compensation, which includes an annual discretionary bonus.
