About the role

Linux Engineers work with the critical infrastructure underlying the rest of the firm’s technology. They maintain and improve the platform that powers Jane Street's production trading systems, leveraging a mix of in-house and open source software to investigate and innovate at multiple levels. Responsibilities include deployment automation, scalable configuration management, and obsessive monitoring, with a focus on reducing errors through automation and solving production issues quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and improve the infrastructure powering Jane Street's production trading systems
  • Investigation and innovation across levels using in-house and open source software
  • Debug kernel performance and develop management tools
  • Resolve production issues in real time
  • Deployment automation, scalable configuration management, and monitoring
  • Collaborate with Trading, Technology, and Operations to build robust systems
  • Perform root-cause analyses and implement long-term fixes in a clean manner

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or other technical discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • Clear and concise communication skills
  • Deep knowledge of operating system fundamentals, especially Linux
  • Fluency with the Unix command line and shell scripting
  • Practical experience with modern Linux systems and systems programming concepts (C, sockets, virtual memory, process lifecycle)
  • Basic understanding of network protocols
  • Strong troubleshooting and profiling/debugging tool knowledge (gdb, perf, DTrace, eBPF, SystemTap)
  • Programming experience in any language (functional languages a plus)
  • Fluent in English
