About the role

Senior Software Engineer role focused on designing, implementing, and optimizing Elasticsearch's core storage and query engine within the Storage Engine team, contributing to high-performance, scalable database and distributed systems for observability workloads.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architectural evolution of core storage engine components, identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks in indexing layouts, serialization formats, and resource utilization.
  • Lead cross organizational initiatives to drive and build industry-leading observability solutions.
  • Collaborate with a globally distributed team focused on logs and metrics capabilities of Elasticsearch.
  • Drive continuous operational and system improvements by promoting clean coding standards and architectural clarity across the platform.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) across key Elasticsearch areas, mentoring the wider engineering organization.
  • Triage, resolve, and review issues and pull requests with a global community and domain experts as needed.
  • Write idiomatic modern Java — Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java!

Qualifications

  • Ability to collaborate across functions and teams and transition between projects and codebases based on priorities.
  • Autonomous work style with demonstrated decision-making in a distributed team using asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication.
  • Proven experience using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code while owning outcomes.
  • Prompt-engineering mindset to leverage AI agents effectively with sound engineering judgment.
  • Experience indexing, storing, and querying time-series or logs data with novel techniques.
  • Experience with data storage technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Prometheus and understanding of their workings.
  • Strong core Java skills with deep understanding of concurrency, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Collaborative, communicative, and respectful in distributed teams.
