About the role

Senior Software Engineer role focused on designing, implementing, and optimizing Elasticsearch's core storage and query engine, with emphasis on storage efficiency, query processing, and data layouts for object storage. Fully remote, distributed team based in Portugal.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architectural evolution of core storage engine components, optimizing indexing layouts, serialization formats, and resource utilization.
  • Lead cross organizational initiatives to build industry-leading observability solutions.
  • Collaborate with a globally distributed team focused on the logs and metrics capabilities of Elasticsearch.
  • Drive continuous operational and system improvements by promoting best practices and architectural clarity.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert across key Elasticsearch areas, mentoring the wider engineering organization.
  • Triage, resolve, and review issues and pull requests with a global community and domain experts.
  • Write idiomatic modern Java – Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java.

Qualifications

  • Ability to collaborate across functions and teams and transition between projects and codebases based on priority
  • Autonomous, able to drive decisions in a distributed team via asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code
  • Prompt-engineering mindset to leverage AI agents effectively with sound engineering judgment
  • Experience implementing novel techniques to index, store, and query time-series or logs data
  • Experience with data storage technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Prometheus
  • Strong core Java skills with deep understanding of concurrency, data structures, and algorithms
  • Collaborative, communicative, and capable of working across distributed teams
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in a distributed team environment
