About the role

Senior Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch Storage Engine team, focusing on core storage and query technologies for observability workloads, including storage efficiency, ES|QL query processing, and data layout optimization for object storage. Fully remote, globally distributed team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architectural evolution of core storage engine components, optimizing indexing layouts, serialization formats, and resource utilization.
  • Lead cross organizational initiatives to build observability solutions.
  • Collaborate with a globally distributed team focused on logs and metrics capabilities of Elasticsearch.
  • Drive operational and system improvements with clean coding practices and architectural clarity across the platform.
  • Serve as SME and mentor to the wider engineering organization.
  • Triage, resolve, and review issues and PRs with domain experts.
  • Write idiomatic modern Java (Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java)

Qualifications

  • Collaborate across functions and teams and transition between projects as needed
  • Autonomous, able to drive decisions in a distributed team using asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code
  • Prompt-engineering mindset to leverage AI agents effectively with sound engineering judgment
  • Implemented novel techniques to efficiently index, store, and query time-series or logs data
  • Experience with data storage technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Prometheus
  • Strong core Java skills with deep understanding of concurrency, designing and optimizing data structures and algorithms
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; collaborative, respectful, and professional in distributed teams
