About the role

Linux Engineer role focused on maintaining Jane Street's critical infrastructure across on-prem and cloud environments, spanning compute, storage, networking, and platform orchestration. The position emphasizes automation, deep systems knowledge, and collaboration with IT and Network Engineering to support production systems.

Responsibilities

  • Building in-house tools and integrating open-source technologies to fit the infrastructure
  • Acting as a Linux expert and teaching other engineers specialist skills like systems debugging
  • Automating workflows to improve speed and reliability
  • Diagnosing and resolving production issues in real time under time pressure
  • Carrying out scheduled changes to the platform (upgrades, migrations, capacity changes, rollouts) with meticulous planning
  • Working across the spectrum from datacenter provisioning to kernel/drivers with Nix and RPMs, storage at scale, and cloud integration in partnership with Network Engineering
  • Contributing to both Linux Engineering and Software Engineering approaches and potentially focusing on production infrastructure

Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable about operating system fundamentals, computer architecture, and systems programming concepts (sockets, virtual memory, process life cycle)
  • Understanding of network protocols at a basic level
  • Comfortable with Linux command line and basic troubleshooting (system health, processes, logs)
  • Experience or ability to solve problems by writing code (any language) and value robust software engineering
  • Intellectual curiosity, collaboration, humility, eagerness to learn from mistakes
  • Strong communication skills
  • Fluent in English
