About the role

Engineering role focused on designing and building Terminal's scalable data platform that powers the unified API, handling streaming, storage, analytics, and processing of terabytes of IoT/time-series data daily.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the streaming and batch pipelines (replication, analytics, and enrichment) that feed the product and API.
  • Build the storage systems that scale to petabytes of time-series data and stay fast under load.
  • Improve platform primitives: data quality, lineage, stream/batch processing, and high-availability infrastructure.
  • Shape how we build, including AI-powered tooling to improve the platform.
  • Contribute to open source technologies when opportunities arise.
  • Make architectural calls to keep the platform ahead of scale.
  • Work day to day in Java and Python.

Qualifications

  • A strong engineer who has built and owned production platforms or distributed systems at real scale and can drive architecture to completion without heavy management.
  • Clean, maintainable code with a solid CS foundation.
  • Hands-on experience with big-data frameworks and building streaming/batch systems that stay correct and fast as data grows (TB to PB).
  • Deep knowledge of distributed systems and failure modes; design for resilience.
  • Platform builder mindset, creating systems that other teams rely on and that last.
  • Ability to scope work, and balance deep detail with rapid experiments.
  • Strong proficiency in Java or other JVM languages (Scala, Kotlin), or quick learner.

Terminal is Plaid for telematics data in commercial trucking. Companies building next generation insurance products, financial services and fleet software for trucking use our Universal API to access GPS data, speeding data and vehicle stats. Raghav (CEO) and Connor (CTO) led product and engineering at a series b-funded neobank where they spent 2.5 years integrating middleware APIs like Plaid & Stripe. Before that, Connor spent 3 years building software for his family-owned logistics company which was acquired by a private equity firm. Raghav’s family is in fleet operations and owns an HVAC company in San Francisco where they operate a fleet of 13 commercial vehicles.
