About the role

Linux Engineers to join the team that maintains Jane Street's critical infrastructure. Role spans on-prem and cloud infrastructure across compute, storage, networking, and stack layers from hardware to workload orchestration. Hiring for both Linux Engineering and Software Engineering approaches with emphasis on automation, production reliability, and deep ownership of systems.

Responsibilities

  • Building in-house tools and systems that make up our platform, or integrating mainstream (often open-source) technologies to feel native to our infrastructure
  • Acting as one of the firm's Linux experts, teaching other engineers specialist skills like systems debugging
  • Automating our own work to improve speed and reliability
  • Diagnosing and resolving production issues in real time, often under time pressure
  • Carrying out scheduled changes to the platform (upgrades, migrations, capacity changes, rollouts) with meticulous planning
  • Working across datacenter provisioning and orchestration, kernels and drivers via Nix and RPMs, production and research storage at scale, cloud integrations with on-prem infrastructure, and Linux desktops in coordination with IT and Network Engineering teams
  • Contributing to and deciding between Linux Engineering vs Software Engineering paths, with opportunities to work deeply in either space
  • Building systems rather than just operating them
  • Collaborating with others to determine best-fit role for candidate (Linux-focused vs software-focused)

Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable about operating system fundamentals, computer architecture, and systems programming concepts (sockets, virtual memory, process lifecycle)
  • Ability to understand network protocols at a basic level
  • Comfortable at the Linux command line and proficient in system health monitoring, processes, and logs
  • Problem-solving through coding in any language and a commitment to robust software engineering
  • Intellectually curious, collaborative, humble, and eager to learn (including from mistakes)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Fluent in English
