About the role

Engineering Manager leading the Notifications Platform team (Foundations) responsible for building and operating the durable infrastructure and services powering Reddit's push, email, and in-app notifications. Focus on reliability, scalability, developer experience, and cross-team collaboration to enable product velocity and high-quality notification experiences at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the team that architects, builds, and operates the Notifications Platform/Foundations at Reddit.
  • Set technical direction for shared platform capabilities spanning notification APIs, eventing and workflow orchestration, delivery pipelines, user preferences, templates, experimentation, and observability.
  • Collaborate with adjacent Notifications ML teams to productionize ML-powered notification systems, providing scalable platform and operational foundations.
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to define platform contracts, improve developer experience, and enable safe and efficient launches of notification experiences.
  • Drive the full development lifecycle: design, develop, test, deploy, operate, and continuously improve highly available services.
  • Establish reliability, scalability, performance, privacy, security, and operational excellence practices across the platform.
  • Build and maintain a diverse, cross-disciplinary team to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Serve as a thought partner to product and upper management to align team plans with company goals.
  • Communicate team work and manage cross-functional expectations with stakeholders.
  • Assist engineers with career goals and development plans.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience building and managing engineering teams.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer or Engineering Manager building and operating large-scale distributed systems or platform services.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, event-driven systems, and APIs in production; experience with notification, messaging, or high-volume delivery systems is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with highly available, low-latency services and operational excellence practices.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, data storage, streaming or messaging systems, and observability tooling.
  • Experience setting technical direction for platform teams and balancing consistency, extensibility, and autonomy.
  • Entrepreneurial, self-directed, innovative, results-oriented, biased towards action in fast-paced environments.
  • Ability to communicate complex topics with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to tackle ambiguous and undefined problems.
