About the role

Principal software engineering role on the Elasticsearch Analytical Engine team, building new analytics capabilities for ES|QL in the new compute engine, providing technical vision for customer-facing interfaces, language syntax, and compute infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Define, lead, and contribute to the development of data-intensive enhancements for ES|QL and the compute engine.
  • Research latest features, data structures, and algorithms to build capabilities for users.
  • Collaborate with partners and product teams to understand needs and build a long-term technical roadmap.
  • Bring expertise in analytics systems to drive an innovative ES|QL roadmap.
  • Act as an authority in several areas of Elasticsearch and guide teammates.
  • Improve areas of expertise based on questions and instincts.
  • Collaborate with UX teams and customer-facing teams to build interfaces and APIs for search and analytics.

Qualifications

  • Experience leading technical projects in data and enterprise architecture.
  • Experience mentoring expert engineers and providing technical guidance.
  • Experience defining long-term technical vision for data-intensive applications across teams.
  • Hands-on experience with search and analytics APIs (e.g., Splunk SPL, Elasticsearch, Datadog, Dynatrace, New Relic).
  • Strong core Java skills; familiarity with standard data structures, concurrency, and modern features like lambdas.
  • Ability to work autonomously and drive projects end-to-end, including technical design and cross-team collaboration.
  • Experience with data storage technologies (Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra) and understanding of how/why they work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; collaborative and empathetic.
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debugging, and optimization while owning outcomes.
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and transition between projects, codebases, or teams based on priorities.
  • Autonomous work style with distributed teamwork and transparent communication.
