About the role

Lead Product Designer focused on web experiences within Monzo's Growth collective, driving discovery and decision journeys for new and existing customers through data-informed, high-craft design on web platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the design of high-quality web experiences that help new and existing customers discover the value Monzo can bring to their financial lives.
  • Using quantitative and qualitative data to identify opportunities, understand customer behaviour and make informed design decisions.
  • Turning customer and business problems into clear hypotheses, designing experiments and using what you learn to shape what we do next.
  • Bringing exceptional visual and interaction craft to our web experiences, creating work that feels unmistakably Monzo while driving meaningful customer and commercial outcomes.
  • Tackling complex and ambiguous design challenges, balancing customer needs, business goals and technical constraints to create simple, effective experiences.
  • Defining compelling product visions and direction, helping teams think beyond individual experiments towards a coherent long-term customer experience.
  • Partnering closely with Product, Engineering, Data and Research throughout the design process, bringing people together around customer problems and opportunities.
  • Using AI to level-up parts of your design workflow. Whether that’s ideation, analysis, prototyping or shipping production code.
  • Taking a pragmatic approach to experimentation — moving quickly when we need to learn, while knowing when an experience needs a higher level of craft and polish.
  • Acting as a role model in Design, sharing your work broadly, mentoring others, and contributing to the growth and success of the wider Design team.

Qualifications

  • A proven track record of designing high-quality web experiences, with a portfolio that demonstrates strong visual and interaction design craft.
  • Comfortable using data to inform design decisions, partnering with Data Scientists or Analysts to understand customer behaviour and measure impact.
  • Ability to connect great customer experiences with measurable outcomes and understand how design contributes to wider product and commercial goals.
  • Comfort with forming hypotheses, experimenting with different approaches and adapting thinking based on learnings.
  • Ability to balance speed and experimentation with a high bar for craft, knowing when to prototype quickly and when to invest in exceptional final experience.
  • Natural collaboration skills to bring together Product, Engineering, Data, Research and other partners around complex problems.
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguity and create clarity and direction when the answer isn’t obvious.
  • Comfort thinking beyond individual screens or experiments and shaping longer-term vision across journeys.
  • A role model who contributes to the growth of the Design team through mentoring, feedback and sharing expertise.
  • Excitement about Monzo’s mission and helping more people discover Monzo's value.

About Monzo Bank

A bank as smart as your phone.

YC has written a good overview of our business on their blog: https://blog.ycombinator.com/monzo-makes-money-work-for-everyone/ Our mission is to make money work for everyone. We are the UK's leading digital bank for individuals and businesses, reinventing the traditional banking industry one customer at a time. We're relentlessly mission driven and always put our customers first - from what products we chose to launch next to our transparency and use of simple language. With a Net Promoter Score of 70+, it shows. From our founding in 2015, we now have over 7 million customers in the UK (13% of UK adults) and are building out our team in the US. We've seen incredible organic growth, acquiring 150,000 customers / month in 2022, with 80% of this coming from word of mouth. Our weekly active user rate is ~60% and ~40% of our active users use us as their Main Bank account, showing that we are a product that is embedded in our users' daily lives. We've grown to ~2,450 staff (~400 of which make up the product/tech team), and are backed by YC, Stripe, Tencent, Mike Moritz, and others. Internally, we encourage an open, collaborative, and inclusive working environment - we were voted the #1 startup where people in the UK want to work for the second year running in 2022. We contribute to open source software, and we continually engage with our wonderful community. We're hiring talented, creative problem-solvers to help us build the bank of the future. Join us!
