About the role

Senior software engineer role on the Elasticsearch - Analytical Engine team responsible for building analytics capabilities in Elasticsearch’s new compute engine and ES|QL API, with a focus on design, implementation, and bug fixes in a distributed, remote environment.

Responsibilities

  • Build data-intensive new features and fix bugs in Elasticsearch and ES|QL analytics capabilities.
  • Research and implement suitable data structures and algorithms for new functionalities.
  • Possibly implement data structures or algorithms within the codebase and work close to OS/hardware where needed.
  • Collaborate with globally distributed teams including UI and API teams to ensure good user experience.
  • Be an expert in several Elasticsearch areas, contributing improvements based on questions and instincts.
  • Engage with community members globally to triage issues and handle pull requests.
  • Write idiomatic modern Java (Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java).

Qualifications

  • Strong skills in core Java and familiarity with standard library data structures and concurrency, plus modern features like lambdas.
  • Experience with software systems engineering.
  • Desire to optimize using efficient data structures and algorithms.
  • Ability to work autonomously and drive projects from design to delivery.
  • Comfort with collaborative development and asynchronous, internet-based collaboration.
  • Experience with data storage technologies (e.g., Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debugging, and optimization while owning outcomes.
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and transition between projects and codebases as priorities shift.
  • Self-driven, autonomous, and able to drive decisions in a distributed team using asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication.
