About the role

Role focused on incident management for Fly.io’s global infrastructure, including Linux kernel features, hosting stack, and collaboration with product teams and upstream providers. Combines hands-on debugging with strong communication and coordination across multiple platform teams.

Responsibilities

  • Incident response and hands-on investigation when incidents occur
  • Inspect hosting stack and Linux systems to determine root causes
  • Become a world-expert in relevant Linux kernel features as needed
  • Collaborate with product teams to understand needs during incidents
  • Coordinate with upstream providers to acquire hardware and resolve issues
  • Engage with various Fly.io platform teams (Fly Machines, networking, MPG, Sprites) to involve the right people in ongoing incidents
  • Read and write code in Rust, Go, Ruby, and Elixir as part of our Infrastructure as Code stack

Qualifications

  • Software development experience with willingness to learn multiple languages (Rust, Go, Ruby, Elixir)
  • Domain expertise in Linux networking, routing, telemetry (Prometheus, OpenTelemetry), and Linux performance measurement
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate cross-team during incidents
  • Hardware and networking experience, even if Fly.io does not rack servers directly
  • Operationally calm under fire and able to jump into incidents to determine required actions
