About the role

Senior AI Research Engineer to characterize, measure, and advance the capabilities of Emergent's coding agents. Deep-work role focused on agent behavior, evaluation research, and applied training to ship improvements at scale.

Responsibilities

  • - Architect the next version of the Emergent agent: shape the core architecture and foundational design choices
  • - Characterize agent behavior deeply and translate findings into quantitative metrics
  • - Design and ship evaluations across reasoning, planning, tool use, code correctness, long-horizon execution, security, and reliability
  • - Drive step-function gains and ambitious bets to advance the state of the art
  • - Climb public benchmarks (e.g., SWE-bench Pro, Terminal-Bench)
  • - Run training and post-training experiments (supervised fine-tuning, RLHF/RLAIF, DPO, distillation, reward modeling, prompt optimization, judge-model calibration) against production-grounded objectives
  • - Own end-to-end work from hypothesis to rollout and post-launch measurement
  • - Make hard calls in subjective, probabilistic systems and communicate reasoning clearly

Qualifications

  • - 5 to 8 years of AI experience, with meaningful time spent either training and fine-tuning models or designing rigorous evaluations and measurement systems
  • - Hands-on with modern AI stack and fluent in Python (Go a plus) for research workflows: training pipelines, eval harnesses, data processing, and statistical analysis
  • - Comfortable with transformers, RLHF/DPO/RL for agents, eval frameworks (Inspect, lm-eval-harness, or equivalent), prompt optimization, judge models, and agent frameworks
  • - Ability to defend benchmarks and metrics, understand noise floors and distribution shift
  • - Enjoys deep-dive into long-tail data to find rare failure modes
  • - Independent operator with leadership presence, able to scope work and influence others
  • - Bias toward velocity with rigorous measurement and honesty in results
