About the role
Engineering Manager (M3) at Benepass leading a Core Services backend team (ledger, decisioning, schedules, rules engine, HRIS integrations, authentication, directory) in a hands-on leadership role.
Responsibilities
- Manage ~4–6 engineers to start, with room to hire as we grow.
- Run 1:1s focused on growth, set expectations against IC leveling matrix, provide constructive feedback.
- Hire, onboard, and level the team. Design a hiring bar.
- Coach project leads to drive kickoff, technical approach, weekly updates, and release; provide support and air cover to do it well.
- Be accountable for results, not activity; stay engaged until the problem is solved.
- Translate company priorities into a sequenced plan; raise timelines if unrealistic, cut scope, and make tradeoffs explicit.
- Protect operational load; Core Services carries production health, incidents, and correctness work.
- Prioritize incidents over roadmap; escalate risks early.
- Lead design reviews; champion simple, correct, observable patterns; review code when necessary.
- Dive into code, prototypes, or production debugging to unblock the team, then step back.
- Maintain invariants for money and eligibility (idempotency, auditability, reconciliation, safe retries).
- Partner with Client Apps, Platform, Customer Engineering, Product, and Ops to reduce bottlenecks.
- Share context early; document decisions; surface risks; drive within project teams.
- Promote AI-native practices; leverage AI to increase leverage and reduce toil; coach team in AI Craft.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years leading teams of ~3–8 engineers (startup or SaaS preferred).
- Proven ability to lead design reviews, enforce engineering standards, and prototype in Python/Django (or equivalent backend stack).
- Experience mentoring engineers through 1:1s, setting growth goals, handling performance issues, and hiring.
- Track record of shipping on commitments and managing a healthy SDLC without turning process into the product.
- Heavy use of AI in own work and ability to describe concrete workflows incorporating AI.
