About the role
Internal tools and automation role building AI-enabled internal tooling and data infrastructure within Benchling's AI & Data Engineering team, focused on shaping architecture, delivering production-grade internal systems, and enabling enterprise-scale workflows with security-conscious, multi-tenant designs.
Responsibilities
- Shape technical direction and architecture: Define foundational architecture for internal tooling and automation, including integration patterns, workflow orchestration, data access, service boundaries, and observability; evaluate when to use an agent.
- Build and ship the early portfolio yourself: Write production code, set up CI/CD and deployment infra, graduate prototypes into production-grade systems, and own production support under a "you build it, you run it" model.
- Design for enterprise from day one: Ensure multi-tenant isolation, secrets management, audit logging, payload encryption, RBAC, and human-in-the-loop controls; collaborate on threat modeling with Security Engineering.
- Enable builders across the company: Coach power users on production patterns, create enterprise-ready developer experience (templates, SDKs, sandboxes).
- Partner across functions: Work with data analytics on source-of-truth datasets, gather requirements from leaders, and drive scoped engineering problems to shipped systems.
- Elevate engineering standards: Set code quality, testing, documentation, on-call practices; drive technical hiring and mentor engineers.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building production systems with strong systems design and integration fundamentals.
- Track record of building internal tools, automation, and systems integrations relied on daily; experience wiring APIs, SaaS platforms, and internal services in production.
- Understanding of workload optimization across deterministic and non-deterministic capabilities; appropriate architectural balance.
- Production experience with at least two of: Python, TypeScript/Node.js, Go; comfort across the stack.
- Experience applying LLMs where appropriate in workflows; focus on real-world impact and adoption.
- Track record from zero to one: built and scaled a platform, function, or product area.
- Experience in regulated or security-sensitive environments; strong enterprise security fundamentals (encryption, access controls, audit logging, secrets management).
- Ability to lead technically without positional authority; set direction and raise the bar in design reviews; mentor engineers.
