About the role

Manager responsible for leading and scaling the teleoperation data collection team to support robot learning, owning the daily operating rhythm, staffing, campaigns, vendor labor, and data quality metrics to enable AI model progress.

Responsibilities

  • Build, train, and lead the data collection team in Fremont, including robot operators and data collection specialists.
  • Own hiring strategy for the function, including defining operator profiles and scaling against demand.
  • Develop onboarding and ongoing training programs with certification on teleoperation rigs, capture hardware, and task protocols.
  • Manage shift scheduling and coverage to meet campaign demand, including extended hours or weekend coverage.
  • Create a career path from data collection into system test, robot operations, and other technical roles.
  • Promote safety culture around teleoperation, equipment use, ergonomics, and safety procedures.
  • Own day-to-day readiness of teleoperation stations, capture rigs, robots, and workcells; coordinate calibration and maintenance.
  • Plan and execute collection campaigns with task taxonomy and volume targets; scope, schedule, report progress.
  • Identify bottlenecks, conduct workflow analyses, and implement fixes.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for rig downtime, capture failures, and protocol drift; implement corrective actions.
  • Create and maintain SOPs, work instructions, protocols, and change control.
  • Support rollout of new capture hardware, sensors, and tooling with Engineering, Facilities, and Safety.
  • Own core operating metrics (throughput, yield, utilization, uptime, cycle time, cost per usable episode) and improve first-pass yield.
  • Define quality bar with AI Engineering and drive continuous improvement in throughput, quality, and unit cost.
  • Track coverage against target taxonomy and maintain dashboards for live visibility into volume and quality.
  • Partner with AI Engineering to translate model roadmap into collection plans and serve as operational point of contact for new projects.
  • Translate engineering data requirements into operator-executable protocols and feedback issues to engineering.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years in technical operations, data operations, manufacturing, industrial/process engineering, lab operations, or production environments.
  • 3+ years leading frontline or technical teams, including hiring, performance management, and mentoring.
  • Familiarity with teleoperation rigs, VR/XR capture setups, motion capture, or wearable sensors.
  • Experience running a metrics-driven operation with throughput, quality, and utilization targets.
  • Experience managing vendors or contract labor, including performance and SLA management.
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting early-stage technology in fast-moving environments with changing priorities.
