About the role

Contract, fully remote expert-level mechanical engineering role focused on designing realistic evaluation tasks and working documents to assess AI models, with emphasis on mechanical design, thermal/fluid systems, or manufacturing tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Build realistic evidence files from provided scenarios (drawings, CAD models, bills of materials, hand calculations, simulation reports, load calculations, equipment schedules, process sheets, tooling drawings, test reports).
  • Write task requests specifying deliverables and handling uncertainty/assumptions.
  • Solve each task end to end and document a reference solution with reasoning for every step.
  • Write precise scoring criteria so independent graders reach the same verdict, including acceptable alternatives and tolerances.
  • Check own and peers' tasks for technical accuracy and ambiguity.
  • Incorporate reviewer feedback within agreed turnaround times and flag guideline gaps or edge cases.
  • Explain to the research team how work in the area is actually done (steps, documents, roles, failure points).
  • Review scenarios and documents the team builds and flag unrealistic aspects for practitioners.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years hands-on experience in mechanical design or stress engineering, thermal/fluids/HVAC, or manufacturing/tooling engineering with demonstrated work performed directly (not just supervision).
  • Working command of standards, methods and codes (e.g., ASME Y14.5 and GD&T, hand-calculation/FEA, ASHRAE/ASME codes, heat transfer and fluid sizing, or design for manufacturing/process capability).
  • Strong calculation and spreadsheet skills and habit of checking units, assumptions and load cases.
  • Clear, precise professional English writing.
  • Ability to work independently and asynchronously against deadlines.
