About the role

Staff Engineer on the Payroll Processing core platform, responsible for architecture, scalability, and long-term technical vision of services handling payroll processing, payments, banking, accounting, and reporting for billions of dollars monthly.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical architecture for the next generation of the global payroll processing engine, designing scalable frameworks across multiple countries.
  • Own the end-to-end delivery of high-impact, complex features from design to production deployment and monitoring.
  • Drive the technical roadmap for the Payroll processing team, addressing performance, reliability, and architectural refactors.
  • Tackle ambiguous technical challenges and convert them into concrete plans for the team.
  • Exercise expert technical judgment to build scalable, maintainable systems and ensure data integrity across interdependent services.
  • Raise the engineering bar by mentoring senior and junior engineers, leading design reviews, and championing best practices for code quality, testing, and observability.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Payments, Risk, Accounting and other engineering leaders to deliver cohesive platform-wide solutions.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with leadership impact.
  • Expertise in large-scale distributed backend systems; strong proficiency in Python and Django preferred.
  • Experience managing complete project lifecycles from design to successful launches independently.
  • Deep expertise in system architecture, data modeling, and building core services with clean abstractions.
  • Keen product sense and ability to advocate for customers; experience building robust business-critical systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication to diverse teams.
  • Experience with MongoDB or similar NoSQL databases is a strong plus.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership while thriving in a team environment.
