About the role

Core Software Engineer (C++) focusing on performance optimization of the ClickHouse database, distributed systems, and collaboration with open-source community. Remote-first role open to locations where ClickHouse hires.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and optimize performance of the core ClickHouse database (query optimization, distributed query optimization, relational operators such as aggregation and joins, caching, low-level optimizations like SIMD).
  • Extend and create performance tests based on real-world or synthetic datasets to ensure sustained performance.
  • Serve as a resource for the Support Engineering team to help debug advanced performance issues.
  • Collaborate with other core teams to assess performance impact of new features and support performance testing and guidance.
  • Engage with the open-source community: resolve issues, review/finish PRs, and answer questions across various channels.

Qualifications

  • Solid professional software development experience in C++ (Unix systems).
  • Strong knowledge of database internals and design.
  • Experience in performance engineering, ideally in a database (or related areas like high-frequency trading, simulation, real-time data processing).
  • Strong communication and collaboration across engineering teams.
  • Willingness to work closely with the open-source community and participate in code reviews with care and respect.
  • Strong problem-solving and production debugging skills.
  • Passion for efficiency, availability, scalability, and data governance.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment with ownership mindset.
