About the role

Inaugural Engineering Manager to lead a small, high-retention engineering team at Ampersand. Hands-on leadership role reporting to co-founder/CTO, with potential to grow into Director or VP of Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and grow a high-performing team across full-stack, customer, and forward-deployed engineering.
  • Run regular 1:1s, give clear feedback, and create conditions for engineers to do their best work.
  • Own onboarding for new engineers and partner with founders on hiring and career development.
  • Spend at least 20% of time on IC work to stay close to codebase and tooling.
  • Drive project management for multi-engineer/customer deliverables.
  • Create environment and infrastructure for fast shipping: code maintainability, docs, workflows, QA tools, automation.
  • Lead AI-accelerated development while maintaining reliability and quality.
  • Own security and compliance alongside Founding Operations Lead (SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR).
  • Manage project-based contract engineers and globally distributed connector contributors.

Qualifications

  • Significant software engineering experience, including 2+ years leading engineering teams in a startup or high-growth environment.
  • Led teams through complex technical initiatives and is excited to do it again.
  • Strong technical judgment for architecture and system design.
  • Experience building engineering culture and systems (ownership, craft, accountability).
  • Excellent written communication; asynchronous-first team.
  • Direct experience interfacing with customers.
  • Experience with Go, TypeScript, React, or similar stacks is a plus.
  • Background in developer tools, APIs, infrastructure platforms, or AI-native products is preferred.
