About the role

Lead ML Infrastructure Engineer responsible for end-to-end ML platform across Samsara's Safety AI organization, owning architecture and platform direction for training, experimentation, inference, and edge deployment at scale across 2M+ devices.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical strategy and own end-to-end delivery of Samsara's ML platform (training, experimentation, batch/online inference, edge)
  • Design, launch, and iterate Safety AI features (CV models, EcoDriving insights, LLM-based reporting) and co-own outcomes including safety metrics, reliability, and cost at production scale
  • Design and operate scalable online and batch inference systems (Ray, Spark); establish deployment patterns, observability, SLOs, and training-to-production workflows
  • Partner with firmware and edge teams to package, validate, and deploy models to Samsara devices; build feedback loops from edge to cloud for continuous improvement
  • Own reliability, observability, and security for ML systems across cloud and edge; manage on-call practices and incident response
  • Take end-to-end technical delivery ownership for high-priority initiatives from modeling and system design through production rollout
  • Be the technical authority for ML infrastructure architecture; mentor engineers and applied scientists; ensure platform decisions balance abstraction with trade-offs
  • Improve developer experience via documentation and best practices; contribute to open source (Ray, Spark, RayDP) and represent Samsara in communities

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in machine learning engineering with tech lead ownership of at least two major ML platform domains
  • Proven track record shipping ML-powered features end-to-end with measurable impact
  • Hands-on Ray and Kubernetes expertise in production; Spark experience preferred
  • Deep understanding of ML fundamentals beyond pipelines (evaluation, dataset design, ablation, drift) and ability to bridge research and engineering
  • Demonstrated cross-org technical leadership on platform decisions and roadmap influence
  • Experience navigating science-engineering trade-offs and communicating them to diverse stakeholders
