About the role

Lead Developer Experience at Buildkite to improve end-to-end engineering productivity across CI, build tooling, codebase health, deployment paths, and AI-assisted development loops for ~80 engineers. Fully remote role open to Australia, New Zealand, or USA (West Coast).

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end developer experience for around 80 engineers, spanning CI, build tooling, codebase health, deployment paths, and the AI-assisted development loop
  • Lead our goal of doubling R&D output per engineer, including defining what 'faster' means and measuring it effectively
  • Stay hands-on and ship the work yourself, landing real PRs across languages and services you may not have touched before
  • Build credibility and relationships across the engineering team and clear roadblocks for teams you don't own
  • Push the frontier on agentic coding tooling, evaluating, rolling out, and measuring impact

Qualifications

  • A strong software engineering background with real production experience
  • Experience inside a platform engineering organisation, or leading AI and developer tooling on an engineering team
  • Evidence of making engineering teams measurably faster with clear outcomes
  • Exposure to meaningful scale in systems and teams
  • Fluency with agentic coding tools and good judgment on when to trust or override them
  • Strong influence and relationship-building skills with ability to drive buy-in
  • intolerance for slow pace with willingness to try new things and take sensible risks
  • Comfort with ambiguity around measurement and using imperfect signals to build a compelling case
