About the role

Hands-on engineering role owning Buildkite's cloud efficiency picture end to end, tracing COGS signals to technical drivers, building cost models, and driving measurable optimisations in AWS/Datadog observability while maintaining reliability and customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Trace cost signals to their technical causes — down to customer-level job costs & state machine changes, GraphQL cost by function, and per-operation unit economics.
  • Build and maintain cost models for our most common and most expensive operations.
  • Rank opportunities into a defensible portfolio with expected saving, risk, effort, and stakeholder involvement.
  • Implement safe, measurable optimisations in code or configuration you own.
  • Partner with engineering teams on larger work, bringing evidence.
  • Drive Datadog and observability efficiency alongside AWS.
  • Establish baselines before changes and verify realised savings in production, with auditable numbers.
  • Build guardrails and tooling — attribution, alerting, cost visibility — to catch regressions automatically.
  • Translate between engineering and Finance to align technical changes with financial outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Delivered meaningful, measured AWS savings in a scaled production environment with a detailed walkthrough (baseline, diagnosis, changes, trade-offs, verified result).
  • Working engineer who reads and writes code and ships changes.
  • Strong systems diagnosis skills for tracing ambiguous signals to precise causes.
  • Sound trade-off judgment balancing savings with reliability risk.
  • Ability to influence multiple teams and drive changes outside direct management.
  • Strong numerical rigor and ability to prove results and savings, with openness to AI-assisted methodologies.
