About the role

Staff Data Engineer to own ingestion and transformation pipelines for patient data, enabling AI-driven patient-trial matching within Trial Library’s HIPAA-grade healthcare platform.

Responsibilities

  • Own the ingestion and transformation pipelines that bring patient records into our platform and shape them into data our matching systems and human experts can trust.
  • Design for reliability in compute-intensive, long-running workflows and implement async pipelines, message queues, and container-based compute to prevent outages.
  • Own data quality end-to-end including schema design, validation, transformation logic, and monitoring to catch problems before clinicians are affected.
  • Partner with AI engineers on data foundations for patient-trial matching and with product engineers on data flow into user workflows.
  • Monitor production, triage issues quickly, and apply pragmatic judgment to balance technology with business needs.

Qualifications

  • 8 or more years of data engineering experience, with at least a couple of years at staff scope or equivalent impact.
  • Strong pipeline engineering: ingestion, transformation, and orchestration of data at meaningful scale with emphasis on data quality and reliability.
  • Deep SQL and PostgreSQL fluency, including schema design and query performance
  • Solid Python and comfort with TypeScript codebases.
  • Deep AWS experience (Lambda, Fargate, SQS, RDS) and ability to choose the right service for the right job.
  • Proven track record of leveraging AI coding tools creatively to build production systems.
  • Autonomous ownership with ability to identify and resolve systemic issues independently.
  • Startup experience, building from scratch in early-stage environments with ambiguity treated as opportunity.
  • Strong systems thinking across backend architecture, APIs, databases, and scalability under real-world constraints.
  • Clear communication and influence, able to explain trade-offs to engineers and non-engineers.
  • Healthcare alignment with interest in improving clinical trial access and health equity; HIPAA experience a strong plus.
