About the role
Staff Mechatronics Engineer to join the Precision Robotics R&D team, owning the mechatronic architecture for next-generation Special Purpose Machines (SPM) for manufacturing custom-made prosthetics. Hybrid role in the South Bay, bridging theory to production-ready systems across concept to prototyping and manufacturing.
Responsibilities
- Own the mechatronic architecture for the SPM platform family; define actuation, sensing, and motion-control approaches and make build-versus-buy and subsystem-partitioning decisions that shape the long-term roadmap.
- System Architecture & Design: Architect and integrate complex robotic hardware systems including precision actuators, sensors, and electromechanical subsystems to meet micron-level reliability for prosthetics manufacturing.
- Special Purpose Machine Design Expertise: Apply knowledge of additive and subtractive processes to design versatile, high-precision manufacturing platforms.
- Set technical standards for hardware design and validation: design reviews, tolerance and error-budget analysis, FMEA, test-and-validation practices.
- High-Fidelity Prototyping: Lead rapid prototyping and perform structural/thermal analyses; validate designs via performance testing and FMEA.
- Cross-Functional Integration: Act as the primary technical interface between mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software teams for seamless system integration.
- Influence long-range goals of the Precision Robotics program and identify what to build or buy for 2–3 year horizons.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of machine-building experience in hardware, mechatronics, or robotics with system-level production experience.
- Built and deployed at least one complex electromechanical system from concept through production ramp.
- B.S./M.S./Ph.D. in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Robotics Engineering.
- Founding Mindset: demonstrated technical leadership across teams without formal authority.
- Technical Mastery: expert 3D CAD modeling; deep understanding of fabrication/manufacturing processes; expertise in robotic kinematics/dynamics, actuation systems, and simulation; hands-on experience with sensor integration, embedded systems, and manufacturing design execution.
- Soft Skills: strong analytical/problem-solving abilities, mentoring, and multi-project management in high-growth environments.
- Ability to self-direct and close issues with cross-team collaboration; ~20% travel to suppliers, manufacturing, and testing facilities.
