About the role

Backend engineer for Kombo's Platform team, focusing on infrastructure-heavy problems at scale, reliability, and developer tooling. Berlin-based on-site role.

Responsibilities

  • Migrating API services and infrastructure components (e.g., Cloud Run to Kubernetes) with attention to autoscaling, graceful shutdown, traffic routing, and production dashboards
  • Diagnosing and fixing memory leaks in Node.js applications using heap snapshots and GC metrics
  • Analyzing Postgres performance and designing indexes or data models to improve queries
  • Designing and implementing scalable, cost-efficient storage solutions (e.g., Google Cloud Storage with Parquet) for logs
  • Building flexible egress IP infrastructure for partner allowlisting
  • Moving alerting/on-call tooling (OpsGenie to incident.io) and managing Terraform-based policies
  • Collaborating with product engineering teams on syncing approaches for large tenants and reducing timeouts/rate limits
  • Enhancing local developer tooling (Cursor/Claude/Codex workflows, VS Code tasks, Git hooks, gcloud auth helpers, CI automation)
  • Empowering product teams to own more of their infrastructure over 1–2 years

Qualifications

  • Strong backend engineering fundamentals and experience building production services, APIs, and database-backed systems
  • Methodical debugging and root-cause analysis
  • Ability to perform high-risk changes with observability, rollout, and rollback considerations
  • Owns ambiguous technical problems and communicates clearly without close supervision
  • Curiosity and ability to learn unfamiliar parts of a system quickly
  • Deep experience with TypeScript and Node.js
  • Postgres performance work including query analysis, indexing, or data-model design
  • Profiling, benchmarking, tracing, or debugging production systems
  • Ownership of large-scale or high-risk migrations
  • Experience with distributed systems, internal tooling, or shared backend infrastructure
