About the role

Senior Software Engineer to join the Git Systems Engineering team at GitHub CoreAI, building and operating highly scalable Git hosting services and contributing to AI-driven software development initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and ship high-quality solutions within the team’s service area, focusing on scalability, availability, and maintainability; gain deep familiarity with owned systems and apply best practices to keep code extensible and operable.
  • Lead technical discussions for features in the team’s area of responsibility; produce design docs/proposals; validate approaches via experiments/prototypes; incorporate stakeholder and customer feedback.
  • Lead by example by writing clean, defensive, maintainable code and mentoring engineers within the team on implementation details, debugging techniques, and product/service expertise.
  • Provide technical leadership in code reviews to ensure changes meet GitHub and team quality standards (correctness, security, reliability, diagnosability, maintainability); ensure code is ready to merge and operate at scale.
  • Partner with engineering and product stakeholders to define requirements, identify dependencies, break work into milestones, and provide estimates and risk/impact tradeoffs for prioritization and delivery.
  • Participate in on-call rotation; act as first responder; troubleshoot live-site issues using logs/telemetry; drive mitigations and safe deployments (including rollback plans); write postmortems with measurable follow-up improvements.
  • Model engineering excellence by improving developer workflows (tooling, automation, repeatable quality checks), share learnings from investigations and incidents, and foster a collaborative, owner-driven culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field and 4+ years of engineering experience with coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python (or equivalent experience)
