About the role

Senior staff-level role responsible for setting multi-year technical strategy for Infrastructure Services (compute, network and edge, and stateful platforms) at 1Password. Hands-on technical leadership, architecture across teams, and people development with a focus on reliability, security, cost optimization, and AI-assisted operations in a remote, US/Canada-based environment.

Responsibilities

  • Set the multi-year technical strategy for Infrastructure Services and define architecture and standards across compute, network and edge, and stateful services.
  • Partner with engineering and product leadership, security, and finance to balance reliability, security, cost, and delivery speed; serve as the senior technical voice for infrastructure.
  • Write design docs, prototype, review complex designs, and respond to major incidents; drive organization-wide improvements in incident management, reliability targets, and disaster recovery.
  • Lead cost, capacity, and efficiency strategy for the cloud footprint with measurable goals.
  • Drive adoption of automation and AI-assisted operations to reduce toil across the organization.
  • Mentor Staff and Senior engineers, raise the bar on design review and engineering practice, and contribute to hiring and talent development.

Qualifications

  • Technical direction across multiple teams with an infrastructure strategy or architecture spanning several teams or an entire organization.
  • Production-scale Kubernetes experience (multi-cluster, multi-tenant, customer-traffic-bearing environments; EKS or similar) including autoscaling, admission control, GitOps, workload identity, and fleet-wide upgrades.
  • Breadth beyond Kubernetes: networking, edge, and stateful data systems; understanding cross-layer impacts of decisions.
  • Proven reliability program implementation: SLIs, SLOs, error budgets; incident response improvements and disaster recovery experience.
  • Cloud cost optimization experience with measurable impact; collaboration with finance on forecasting and tradeoffs.
  • Security-by-design mindset: workload identity, least-privilege IAM/RBAC, credential rotation, multi-tenant isolation; collaboration with security on risk and compliance.
  • Hands-on coding and IaC: Go (or similar language) and Terraform; automation of complex, high-toil operational workflows at fleet scale.
  • Ability to influence without formal authority: clear strategy and design docs, senior leadership communication, cross-team alignment.
  • Experience mentoring and growing engineers, shaping design reviews and talent development.
