About the role

Microsoft’s CO+I Energy Technology team seeks a Principal Mechanical Engineer- Energy Systems to provide technical leadership for energy systems in Microsoft datacenters, defining architectures, requirements, and deployment pathways that improve reliability, grid compatibility, and operational continuity across a global portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Define the technical roadmap for power generation mechanical systems and technologies, including fuel calculations, CFD calcs, pipeline layouts, airflow, acoustics.
  • Perform fuel-consumption and heat-rate calculations, including HHV/LHV basis, gas composition, standard versus actual flow, part-load performance, and ambient derating.
  • Size natural-gas piping, regulators, valves, filtration, compression, and metering systems; evaluate pressure drop, compressible flow, and transient fuel demand.
  • Develop heat and mass balances; size pumps, heat exchangers, cooling loops, expansion systems, and heat-rejection equipment.
  • Develop and review P&IDs, equipment specifications, piping layouts, mechanical interfaces, and control sequences.
  • Evaluate thermal expansion, piping stress, vibration, maintainability, redundancy, and failure scenarios.
  • Support the fabrication, assembly, and installation of the engineering solutions.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and troubleshooting of the engineering solutions in case of issues or failures.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies and trends in the mechanical engineering field and energy industry.
  • Communicate and present the project status, results, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide expertise in technology deep dives, comparisons, and assessments of the general applicability of innovative technologies in datacenters.
  • Perform engineering analysis, simulation, and testing to validate the functionality, performance, and reliability of the technologies and systems under development.
  • Provide guidance on compliance with applicable codes and standards, including IEEE standards as well as FERC and NERC rules.
  • Lead technical development of mechanical architectures and equipment requirements that system performance for mission-critical datacenter loads.
  • Partner across utility, grid, policy, and infrastructure teams to interpret emerging needs and requirements, translate them into technical standards, and influence practical implementation pathways across regions.
  • Guide the technical evaluation of enabling technology solutions using a system-level approaches that improve datacenter performance.
  • Champion innovative technical principles and forward-looking technologies related to industry trends and advances in various engineering fields related to energy systems. Develops and shares new and unique technical knowledge.
  • Collaborate with Microsoft engineering, operations, commercial, and external supplier ecosystems to pilot, validate, and scale power generation technologies and systems through solutions that are technically robust and operationally feasible.
