About the role

GitHub's Billing team builds and maintains systems behind how developers and organizations pay for GitHub, including payment processing, billing infrastructure, abuse detection, and compliance. The role focuses on reliable, scalable billing systems, fraud protection, and collaboration across teams in a remote-first environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve billing and payment systems that serve millions of GitHub users, driving architectural decisions that balance reliability, scale, and developer velocity.
  • Lead the detection and mitigation of billing abuse, shaping signals, tooling, and strategies to keep the platform safe.
  • Work across the stack, from backend services to APIs, and occasionally touch frontend where needed.
  • Create and guide others in developing clear testing plans to assure solution quality, reliability, and performance; defining success metrics; and integrating customer feedback for continuous improvement while ensuring security and compliance.
  • Mentor and grow engineers across the team and broader org through pairing, feedback, leadership, and engineering-wide practices.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools like GitHub Copilot to aid the team.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and partner with stakeholders, leading discussions on shared technical problems across GitHub and Microsoft.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, lead incident response, and drive reliability improvements based on operational learnings.
  • Own and advocate for the health and quality of systems, including on-call for first responder rotations and live incidents.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in software engineering, delivering production software using languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
  • Experience designing and operating services on cloud platforms such as Azure, including infrastructure and deployment considerations.
