About the role

Senior Embedded Software Engineer role at Samsara focusing on firmware for resource-constrained, battery-powered and gateway devices, with hardware bring-up, cross-layer responsibilities, and mentorship at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Shape the hardware, not just the code that runs on it. Sit in reviews with electrical engineers and choose SoCs, flash/RAM, and sensors; validate on prototypes reaching customers in months.
  • Be the first person to make a new board do anything at all. Bring up new platforms from virgin silicon: configure I/O, get SPI, I2C, UART, BLE talking, debug system init, validate the design, and turn unproven hardware into a product.
  • Own the layers everything else depends on. Peripheral drivers, secure bootloaders, device firmware updates, and core management layers like power and connectivity.
  • Chase every microamp. Design protocols and hardware management for battery-powered sensors and gateways to maximize device life.
  • Work with the people who ship the whole product. Partner with product, full-stack, mobile and quality engineers to ensure data integrity and usefulness downstream.
  • Raise the bar for the engineers around you. Senior-level leadership, mentorship, design reviews, and driving engineering practices toward customer and business outcomes.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years building firmware for resource-constrained systems.
  • Led firmware development for several new products end to end.
  • Substantial bare-metal and RTOS experience – Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or equivalent.
  • Brought up new boards and performed first power-on of unproven hardware.
  • Fluency in low-level interfaces – SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, ADC, and hardware-software debugging.
  • Real bench instincts with oscilloscope, network analyzer, RF spectrum analyzer as hypothesis tools.
  • Senior-level scope spanning hardware, firmware, cloud and quality from concept to shipped product.
  • Cross-layer judgment linking driver-level decisions to customer experience.
  • Fluency in C and ability to read linker maps, stack traces, etc.
  • Strong documentation habits for design docs, reviews, and post-mortems.
  • Ability to ship fast with automated testing and maintain quality.
