Senior Software Engineer II - Enterprise Foundations
About the role
Senior level backend-focused role owning complex, multi-quarter integration workstreams for Instacart's Enterprise Foundations, driving architectural direction, cross-team collaborations, and reusable patterns to scale the Retailer Platform across large grocers and international markets. Remote-friendly with flexible work policy.
Responsibilities
- Own a multi-quarter integration workstream end to end — e.g., unified customer identity across FoodStorm and Storefront Pro, international storefront and search expansion for enterprise retailers, or consolidation of bespoke retailer-vertical services onto shared Instacart platform rails — from problem framing through design, implementation, rollout, and deprecation of legacy paths.
- Drive the technical direction for your area: ERDs, design trade-offs, and cross-team alignment through reviews and clear artifacts.
- Lead vendor and cross-team integrations with focus on observability, fallback behavior, and cost/latency guardrails; challenge partner designs early.
- Build reusable patterns, frameworks, and templates adopted across teams; produce system-at-a-glance docs and migration runbooks.
- Operate hands-on as a senior IC on high-leverage work; raise design quality, code quality, observability, and operational rigor.
- Mentor junior engineers, delegate implementation pieces, and maintain technical ownership while collaborating with senior/staff engineers.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of backend software engineering experience with end-to-end ownership of complex, multi-quarter projects as a senior IC.
- Ability to act as technical DRI for cross-team workstreams; proactive problem framing, option proposals, risk identification, and driving adoption.
- Experience designing and shipping distributed systems and integrations across multiple services, teams, or external partners in production for real customers.
- Strong proficiency with backend technologies (e.g., Ruby/Rails, Python, Go or similar), relational databases, distributed data systems, and cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP).
- Track record of durable technical artifacts (ERDs, design docs, runbooks, reusable patterns) enabling others to build with minimal ongoing support.
- Ability to operate in ambiguous, high-growth environments with evolving partner roadmaps and commitments.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
