About the role

Cryomechanical team designs, integrates, and sustains cryogenic mechanical systems and lab infrastructure to support Microsoft Quantum hardware development from concept to producible hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end 3D CAD for cryogenic subassemblies and top-level mechanical integrations (cold fingers, mK and 4 K stages, radiation shields, vacuum interfaces, cable/harness routing); produce 2D drawings with GD&T and tolerance stackups.
  • Build and steward top assembly and BOM; manage part numbering, configurations, ECO/ECR workflows, and PDM/PLM toolchains (SolidWorks, Windchill, OnePDM).
  • Lead Cryomechanical Engineering (CryoME) design reviews using standard packages (3D CAD, 2D drawings, specs, materials, coatings, IQC, cryogenic screening plans, manufacturing/assembly flows, risks, schedules).
  • Translate system requirements into mechanical specs for thermal anchoring, heat-load budgets, CTE mismatch management, vacuum sealing, vibration isolation, RF/DC cable management, and cross-temperature-stage integration.
  • Create SOPs with detailed work instructions for installations and data capture, ensuring engineering intent is clear for field engineers/technicians.
  • Drive DFM/DFX with suppliers by generating build packages, supporting fabrication through first-article approval, dispositioning nonconformances with data-driven tolerances, and capturing as-built changes in drawings and BOMs.
  • Embodies Microsoft culture and values.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field OR Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years of industry or R&D experience OR equivalent experience.
