About the role

Operations Manager at Nottingham Hybrid Sort Centre responsible for leading 50–100+ operatives, ensuring shift plans, throughput, quality, health & safety, and continuous improvement in a high-volume, time-critical sortation environment.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver shift plan end to end people deployment, throughput, quality standards, and health & safety compliance
  • Lead, develop, and performance-manage a frontline team of 50–100+ operatives
  • Build mechanisms that hold the operation together: controls, cadences, metrics, SOPs, change management and own adoption
  • Plan ahead for future shifts; labour, training, and risk management
  • Own the end-of-shift handover; communicate what happened, what is at risk, and what the next shift needs to know
  • Stay decisive through volume peaks, outages, and labour gaps; triage, solve, contain, restore flow
  • Present and document briefs, escalations, handovers or post-incident reviews
  • Implement changes into live operation (e.g., robotics, new sortation tech, onboarding clients) and lead team through change

Qualifications

  • Experience scaling operations or sites (zero to scale)
  • Experience managing a physical operation (e.g., quick commerce, grocery, e-commerce fulfillment, last mile, 3PL, etc.)
  • Strong communication and people management skills (brief 80+ operatives, escalate to senior leadership)
  • Proven ability to create and own a mechanism with a measurable impact (control, cadence, metric, document standard)
  • Ability to own and explain metrics and drive improvements
  • Understanding frontline work through direct leadership or embedded experience
