About the role

Basis is seeking a Controller to build the financial systems and operating foundation for its growth, owning accounting integrity and providing timely insight into how the company earns and spends money. The role emphasizes AI-forward finance processes, close, reconciliations, spend monitoring, reporting, and scalable controls, reporting to the Head of Finance.

Responsibilities

  • Own the integrity of accounting and financial systems for the company
  • Redesign workflows across close, reconciliations, spend monitoring, reporting, and other core work with an AI-forward mindset
  • Determine which tasks AI can own and where human review is needed while keeping systems explainable and auditable
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to turn internal learnings into better systems and product insights
  • Build and manage an operating model for a modern AI company’s finance function
  • Operate with high ownership, combining technical accounting depth with systems thinking and strong business judgment
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Product, Sales, People, and company leadership to align finance with company objectives
  • Work in-person in NYC, Flatiron office, five days a week

Qualifications

  • 6-12 years of progressive accounting and finance experience with ownership of accounting operations at a high-growth company
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge across financial reporting, revenue recognition, accruals, capitalization, equity, and related areas for a fast-growing AI company
  • Systems mindset with ability to translate messy processes into clear workflows, reliable data, controls, and scalable rhythms
  • Experience building systems for accounts payable, procurement, expense management, purchasing approvals, vendor commitments, and spend reporting
  • Strong analytical judgment and ability to explain financial changes and business implications
  • Ability to partner effectively with technical and nontechnical teams including Engineering, Product, Sales, People, and leadership
