Software Engineer, Developer Velocity
Hybrid (Remote - US (SF or NYC))$198.8k - $265kFull-timePosted yesterday
About the role
Role focused on developer-productivity foundations and AI-enabled developer tooling to increase engineering velocity across Hex. Owns internal developer platform, CI/CD, dev environments, and safety, while also designing an AI layer to enable coding agents to operate with awareness of Hex’s codebase and lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Own the internal developer platform end to end: architecture, build, rollout, operation, and measurement.
- Invest in build and CI/CD: monorepo tooling, local/remote caching, CI pipelines, merge queues, fast and reliable test suites, safe rollout/deploy mechanisms.
- Build great developer environments: fast local builds and caching, reproducible multi-platform cloud development environments.
- Raise org-wide velocity: establish metrics and dashboards (cycle time, review latency, change failure rate) and partner with teams to remove bottlenecks.
- Build the agent context layer: repo-level context infrastructure, guidance conventions, architecture and domain context, shared skills/subagents/hooks for Hex’s codebase.
- Evaluate and integrate new third-party coding tools and make them work against Hex’s codebase and tools (Slack, Notion, Linear, etc).
- Drive adoption through developer experience: default setups, docs, low friction, embed with teams to generalize wins into shared platform capabilities.
- Own the safety layer: permissions, secrets handling, and audit trails.
Qualifications
- 5+ years in developer productivity, build/release engineering, or internal platforms.
- Deep build-systems and CI/CD expertise (repo tooling, caching, pipelines, safe deployment workflows).
- Breadth across the stack (backend code through IaC, deployment, observability).
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript/Node.js and SQL; Python a plus.
- Comfort with backend systems, APIs, and distributed/async workflows.
- Hands-on experience with LLMs and agent frameworks (tool calling, MCP, context management, orchestration, failure handling).
- Fluency with AI coding tools and opinions on their limitations.
- Platform mindset focused on adoption, self-service, and ship-first defaults.
- Solid AWS / Docker / Kubernetes fundamentals.
- Excellent written communication; documentation and templates scaling beyond conversations.
- Comfort with ambiguity in a rapidly evolving space.
